On Neisseria Meningitidis
While meningitis morbidity rates usually fall under 10%, the particular virulent strain of the meningococcal bacteria that invaded me had a morbidity rate of 90%.
It is important to know that bacterial meningitis, in any form or fashion, can be deadly.
Early detection and early treatment are essential.
Usually early symptoms are flu-like. There is an onset of fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, etc.. There may be disorientation and the onset of purpuric rashes. If these are at all extreme, take heed. As for me, I thought a rough flu was coming on and I lost precious time. By the time I reached the hospital, my fever was well over 105 and the purpura fulmanans, a harsh rash, was already invading my limbs.
The meningococcal bacteria invades the bloodstream and causes an irritation and inflammation of the meninges, the membranes lining the brain and spinal chord. In my case, conditions were so severe, that fatal sepsis was anticipated and short of that, it was believed that normal brain function had been egregiously compromised. Thank God, this was not so.
As to prevention, educate yourself and vaccinate. Help is available.

Of course the standard precautionary rules apply. A good diet and proper rest and the avoidance of stress matter. So do the washing of the hands and the not drinking out of someone else’s cup! You know the drill. Value and protect the immune system.
My case was classic because I was pushing so hard while carrying a walking pneumonia.
My immune system was a time bomb.
