A Victory of the Heart

This is the profound story of all of the suffering and pain that accompanied Rich's extraordinary 441 day hospitalization and journey through the valley of the shadow of ..... of the neisseria meningitis and coma and sixteen major surgeries and impossible odds and near death ..... of the miracles and of his surviving and beating the unthinkable ..... of the remarkable family and friends and doctors and goodness and grace that surrounded ..... and most importantly, of the power of prayer and faith and will and belief.

It is a rich story of redemption and reclamation and of a new life in a brave new world, where a now and forever disability and pain daily taxes the limits of understanding and acceptance.

Rich says that he actually wrote it in a matter of months upon his return home, but that he needed to edit for more than a year in order to do justice to what is a sometimes harsh, always bittersweet, and ultimately, joyfully redeeming story. He is especially proud of passages like Kelly is the Answer, Aunt Mary's Legacy, Feet, They Came and They Went and We Are Never, and As the Parade Passes By.

For a tale that one would assume to be dark, good humor abounds throughout as out of the darkness, comes light and inspiration.

What Must Needs Come

Written a few years before Rich became ill, this is the result of one of his life's great passions, where as a historian, he takes the reader into the mind, heart, and soul of General Robert E. Lee of the Army of Northern Virginia on the climatic third day at Gettysburg. Because Lee made all the calls and decisions that led to this Union victory at what was arguably the single-most important battle in American History ---- where God's will or "What Must Needs Come" as Lincoln suggested in his Second Inaugural Address was finally realized, its singular importance cannot be overestimated.

It is a history that is up close, personal, readable, and live. It also dramatically relates the rough and tumble of harsh history to the heart and soul of America today, as it clearly demonstrates why this story matters to each and every one of us. It is simply a great story for both the history buffs and the average reader alike.

It Isn't Cheaper by the Dozen Anymore

Rich's first book, it is a testament to life, to finding the gifts and blessings that are showered upon all, and to looking for the extraordinary in the everyday and ordinary.

In a series of reflective essays about life and what it does to us all, about fathering twelve, and about contributing to family, to community, and to life's purpose, it is both revealing and deeply moving.
